Improved Roosevelt School Schedule for the 2025-26 School Year
At the March 7, 2025 District 90 Board of Education Meeting, the Board approved enhancements to the Roosevelt Middle School for the 2025-26 School Year.
The improved modified block schedule builds upon enhancements made for the 2024-25 school year by incorporating daily math and daily world languages across all grade levels. More instructional minutes in math will support building a strong foundation in mathematics, essential for future academic and professional pursuits. Daily world language will support student success in an increasingly global community.
The schedule was created by the Roosevelt Building Leadership Team, comprised of teachers representing all grades and disciplines, in collaboration with District leadership. Work on the schedule began in the fall of 2024 with a review of research, state and district educational goals, current instructional minutes, staff and student input, and findings from other middle school schedules.
The new schedule for 2025-26 is a nine-period modified block schedule that includes three daily core classes (English, Math, and Science or Social Studies) for 77 minutes, and three daily 37 minute classes (Physical Education, Exploratory, and World Language).
All students will have the following in their schedule:
- English/Language Arts - daily for 77 minutes
- Math - daily for 77 minutes
- Science - every-other-day for 77 minutes
- Social Studies - every-other-day for 77 minutes
- Exploratory - daily for 37 minutes (quarterly rotation of STEM, Music, Art, Digital Citizenship/Executive Function)
- World Language - daily for 37 minutes
- Physical Education - daily for 37 minutes
- Lunch/Recess - daily for 43 minutes
- Advisory - weekly for 25 minutes
Benefits of the new schedule include:
- Increased math minutes and daily math in all grades
- Daily world language in all grades
- Mix of blocked and shorter classes to allow for different instructional approaches
- STEM added for 5th grade
- Maintains daily recess for all grades, allowing for clubs, activities, and outdoor time
- Multiple schedule options for students to receive necessary support/intervention classes

In order to add minutes to math and world language, small adjustments were made in other areas. For example, Language Arts (LA) in 5th and 6th was integrated into daily ELA classes. Block classes were reduced from 81 to 77 minutes. Lunch/recess was reduced from 50 minutes to 43 minutes, and passing periods were reduced from four to three minutes. The school day will be extended by three minutes (8:30 AM - 3:18pm). The Communications exploratory class will change to a Digital Citizenship/Executive Function class for all grades and the Technology exploratory class for 5th grade will shift to STEM.
School and district leaders are working on plans to ensure a smooth transition to the new schedule for teachers, staff, students, and families. New information will be shared as it becomes available, such as information on the new Digital Citizenship/Executive Function exploratory class.
Families will receive the individual schedules for their students in mid-August.
