Extreme Cold Closes D90 Schools on Wed. January 30 & Thurs. January 31

The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecast dangerously cold temperatures for the next two days. Wednesday is expected to have a daytime high of minus 13 degrees and wind chill values approaching minus 45 degrees. The predicted air temperature on Thursday at 8 a.m. is for minus 21 degrees with a dangerous wind chill throughout the morning hours. Due to these conditions, all District 90 schools and administrative offices will be closed on Wednesday, January 30 and Thursday, January 31. All after-school and evening activities are also canceled for Wednesday and Thursday.

We have made this decision based upon the anticipated impact of the weather situation on the safety of students and staff. The National Weather Service indicates that at the temperatures being predicted frostbite can occur to exposed skin in less than ten minutes. The NWS also discourages any travel or outdoor exposure. As usual, we collaborated with both Oak Park and River Forest High School District 200 and Oak Park Elementary District 97 in reaching this decision.

Information about the dates for making up student attendance will be communicated in the near future.
